Screen Door Repair and Other Maintenance

by on Jan.18, 2017, under Insulation, Plumbing, Ranch Maintenance

Sometime last year, the mice or birds chewed a hole through the screen on our screen door.  We brought up some new screen and spline to make a repair.

We started by removing the screen door from the frame.  This involved adjusting the rollers on the bottom of the door for as little pressure as possible, the prying the door up and over the bumps which the rollers run on.  We set the screen onto our floor to work on it. We started by locating the end of the spline, and pulling it out of the channel to release the screen material.

Gas Lines for the LittleHouse

by on Jan.18, 2017, under Gas Appliances

We came up in late October to run some propane lines into the LittleHouse.  These are to feed a wall-mounted, direct-vent propane heater,  gas water heater, oven/stove, and possibly refrigerator.  The house heater will be mounted on the North wall, near the northwest corner of the house.  We hope to have solar radiant heating run under the floor throughout the house, but the propane will be our backup heating system.

The other appliances are all located in the kitchen area, along the north wall of the kitchen.

We started out by installing a manifold in the Northeast corner or the house.  There are two 6″ black pipe nipples installed on the back, along with two plugs on the unused ports on the back, and one plug on the unused port on the side.  We also installed a gas valve at the inlet to the manifold. This is where the propane tank will tie in.  From there, we have one line run to the direct-vent heater location, and a second line running to the kitchen.

First Monsoon Storm 2015

by on Jul.10, 2015, under Seasons

We made it up to the Ranch in May to get the Littlehouse ready for summer.  Forgot to take any pictures for that trip.

Later, I went up to the Ranch for the weekend of June 27th for our annual Ham radio Field Day event.  Radio conditions were only fair this year, but we did get a really good thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon.

Paint Colors

by on Oct.20, 2014, under Trim & Paint

We did a little painting this past year, using the same colors that we had used on the house to paint the shed.  On this last trip, I ran across the paint cards that identify the colors. I thought I might post them here, so that we can look up what the colors were even if we end up losing the cards.

The Brown color is Behr 230F-6 (Earth Tone).

Remote Monitoring of Solar Charger

by on Sep.25, 2014, under Electrical

Over the labor day weekend, I installed a new add-on for my Midnite Solar Charge Controller.  It is called a Whizbang Jr.

Basically, this allows the charge controller to measure the actual current directly into and out of the battery, without worrying about what loads I might have turned on at any point in time.

This allows the charge controller to make better decisions on when to stop charging on any given day, putting less strain on the batteries.  It also will allow me to more effectively monitor the actual state of charge of the batteries, rather than guessing based on battery voltage.  But that part hasn’t been added to the software, yet.

I haven’t grabbed any photos of my install yet, but here is a generic one that I’ve borrowed from the manufacturer…
