Critters and such…

by on Oct.17, 2010, under Seasons, Uncategorized

We went for a hike on Friday.  We went down to the old Well #5 to see if it still had water in the tank, then we hiked around the road and up to Gunners Mate Road (about 3 miles altogether).  On the way, we found some interesting critters.

Here is one of a pair of baby Horned Toad Lizards that were only about six feet from each other on the road. He had just caugth a bug of some kind to eat.

Fall Campfire

by on Oct.17, 2010, under Seasons

We brought the two grandsons up for October Break.  One of the highlights of the trip was that it was calm enough and not too dry to have a campfire.  We dug out the old “Dave Coester” built fire ring, and taught the two boys how to build a proper fire.  Then we roasted marshmellows over the coals.  It was cool.

Toilet Install

by on Oct.17, 2010, under Plumbing

Welcome to civilization…

We managed to install out toilet in the bathroom at the Littlehouse last week.  I didn’t make any step-by-step photos, but they are all pretty much the same.

Bathroom Floor Tiles

by on Oct.06, 2010, under Flooring

I arrived on Friday to lay the floor tiles for the bathroom.  They are from Home Depot, and the pattern is “Sorrana”.  They are kind of a mottled reddish-brown color.

First I had to finish the last wall of the shower.  So on Saturday, I carefully measured where the hole for the shower control would go, and cut out the hole.  After applyying some silicone sealent in the right places, I installed the shower  wall and the shower head.

Next, I began the tile install by cutting all of the tile pieces for the sides and the notches around the doors.  Then on Sunday, I mixed the thin-set mortar and laid the tiles on the cement board.  On Monday, I grouted all of the joints with a camel brown color.  I was a little worried while grouting, that the grout would come out rough.  It seemed to be drying too fast while I was working it into the joints.  But the later step of cleaning the excess grout off the tiles with a damp sponge smoothed out all of the grout lines.

The batteries for the camera were dead, so I wasn’t able to get pictures during the install.  Before I left on Wednesday, I snapped some photos with the cel phone camera.  They aren’t very good quality pictures, but you can get an idea of how they turned out.

Fall Maintenance 2010

by on Oct.06, 2010, under Ranch Maintenance

While I was up laying floor tile, I had some drying time to make use of.  I re-insulated the water inlet pipes.  I don’t know what happened to the first application, but it was gone.  This time, I used platic ties, as well as electrical tape to hold it in place.
